ANNAPURNA is proud to present the striking debut album of ÄSPING, The Lion of Piraeus, on vinyl LP format.
ÄSPING is a collaboration project where the two constant members, Åsa Nordgren (vocals, composition) and Michael Idehall (electronics, composition), invite others to experiment with music and sound. Although they have performed live on a few occasions, The Lion of Piraeus is their first music release.
On The Lion of Piraeus, Michael and Åsa were invited to Athens to create music with Yiannis K. of the renowned Greek black metal band Serpent Noir. The eight songs of The Lion of Piraeus were composed and recorded during a week in the summer of 2014 in the old harbor city of Piraeus, now a part of Athens. The Lion of Piraeus is a sculpture defaced by Vikings who carved runes into it in the 11th century. The lion seemed a fitting symbol for the combination of Scandinavian and Mediterranean sensibilities.
The sound of ÄSPING changes depending on the musicians who are involved in a particular project. On The Lion of Piraeus, the inclusion of Yiannis K. provides a solid base of guitar-driven melody. Åsa?s characteristically strong vocals are always present, as are Michael?s electronic textures and astute production. Altogether, the recording is a haunting, bewitching sojourn into mystical and metaphysical depths. And this is only the beginning for ÄSPING...
